Our Story

In the year 1881, Mr. Deve Gowda started a coffee plantation in the tiny village of Avathi of Chikmagalur District of Karnataka. Named Shivekaa Coffee Estate, the original 4 acres of plantation has expanded into 762 acres of lush farmland under the leadership of his son, Mr. A. D. Rajarame Gowda, and his wife Mrs. Kallamma.

Their son, Mr. A. R. Purnesh, and his wife Mrs. Mamatha Purnesh gave the century-old plantation a new direction by adding Pepper, Cardamom, and Arecanut to the plantation business. Today the 4rth generation of the Gowda Family, Mr. A. P. Rajaram Gowda has expanded the business further by adding the concept of “live at the homestay and see life in plantation” into the business.

History of Coffee in India

Today, coffee is grown worldwide, however, its beginning is shrouded in mystery. Many believe the Ethiopian plateaus of the ancient world were where coffee was discovered for the first time accidentally by goat herders.

Around the 15th century, Somalian merchants began to export the coffee beans to Yemen, where it was used primarily by Sufi Monks to help in better concentration. A century later, the use of coffee had spread through the Middle East, Northern Africa, and India.

It is said that coffee entered India through the hands of Sufi saint, Baba Budan in the latter half of the 1600s. The first-ever coffee production began under him in the Chikmagalur district of present-day Karnataka.

Today the economy of Chikmagalur depends almost entirely on coffee production. As the leading producer of premium quality coffee in the country.
